With an inch of rain Friday on wet ground, plus snowmelt (in the mountains), another 1"+ yesterday means the river in town flooded, but at least this time, there was no ice in the river to make a dam. It went up and peaked this morning, but it’s already going back down. I’m not sure how much damage was inflicted, but the spots that usually go under were spared - barely.

This gas station and its immediate neighbor both went under TWICE in six months, back in 2017. Once was a near-historic high, water was like 2-3 ' deep inside the store. At least this one wasn’t so bad, I think both buildings and the pumps were ok. Underground fuel tanks probably will have to be inspected at least, before they’re open for fuel again.

But the nearby “falls” were really, really ripping this morning:

Not the falls, just a local park

rope swing anyone?

No one on that rope swing under the trestle bridge today, lol. People do jump off the top of that in the summer, by the way. And most of them survive.

The scariest bit was this part of the old mill building, where water was ripping into it and then out through an unseen hole in the bottom. Yikes.

It is truly a wonder to behold when water gets ripping like that. It’s especially amazing in tight quarters like that, you c an really get the sense of power.

That rope swing looks fun as hell too!

You can see why there used to be a mill or something right there!

That rope swing, trestle bridge, are legendary around here. I’ve never done either, to be honest. But I know people who’ve been off the top and lived to tell the tale.

There was a bridge in my hometown, with a similarish river and similar bridge . It was sketchy when the water was too low, and sketchy when the water was too high, but fine if you knew when to go.

Our stay at home order has a loophole: state parks are still open. I need to pick one in southern Indiana to travel to soon, just so I can see my favorite wet spots.

Unfortunately the popular  state park trails are closing down because people can’t distance themselves without adult supervision. Idiots.

My brain kept trying to tell me there was a calm surface reflecting the top portion of a bridge in this picture

That may be the case here. In any event, scouting is wise, as I could easily imagine a huge tree being wedged in the river directly below the bridge, after a storm.
